Look around you. When you are at the gym, that is. What do you see? More importantly, WHO do you see?
I think almost all CFers can attest to this: You may have started at CF all by yourself (oooh, according to all the hearsay about Corps Fitness, that’s scary!), you may have started already knowing someone who was a member (a little bit of comfort there), or you may have started with another buddy (I’m only going if you go too!); but no matter what the circumstances were when you joined, you soon became engaged in a camaraderie far bigger than you could ever have imagined.
You took on the physical challenge of Corps Fitness classes for a happier, healthier you. But in no time, you realize that you are part of something much bigger than just yourself….you are a part of a team.
The evidence of these special bonds, camaraderie and friendships are everywhere; a group getting together to take on their first half marathon, a pair dedicating training time and effort to do a Half Ironman, a large group committing to do a Tough Mudder back in the earlier days of the TM, gathering as many as available to hike the Pinnacle, and even a group of friends getting together for a fun run and friendship along the way. Is it hard to see why these friendships get established?
The saying goes something like “Surround yourself with people who make you want to be a better person.” At CF, it’s difficult to just be a warm body who checks in, does their workout as an individual, and checks out; maybe you can get away with that elsewhere, but not at Corps. We motivate each other, we encourage one another, we have each other’s backs. We have accountability to work as hard as the person next to us, and at our most unmotivated times, we get ourselves to class because of our Corps Fitness team members who we know are waiting for us to walk in the door. It’s the Corps Fitness way. It’s a well known fact that Corps Fitness classes will push you to physical limits that you might not have thought you’d ever reach, but it’s easy to see why you can reach beyond those expectations. Look around you…. Look and see all the people who make you want to be a better person!
This coming weekend, Zach will be running the Blues Cruise 50k - quite an accomplishment!! He has been training hard on the Blue Marsh trails and is looking forward to getting more CF time after the race. As if that isn’t enough, Zach is raising money for the IM ABLE Foundation through his first giving site as well and is almost 1/2 way to his $1000 goal. If you’d like to donate, please visit Zach’s site!
Good luck, Zach!!

First…..October. It’s BAAAA-AAAACKKKK! October is Carry The Load Challenge month. We kick off Monday, October 3rd, and this year, we will alternate weeks/class days that the load-bearing exercises are incorporated into workouts. First week, Corps Fitness classes (MWF) will be Carry The Load challenged, second week, will be all Cross Fit classes (T/TH), etc. Carrying heavy weights is an excellent way to torch calories and fat, but be mindful of your body and joints.
An additional component this year is our Honor Wall. WHO are you going to carry through the month? We often do things at CF to honor someone for their battles, their sacrifices, their courage, and this challenge will follow that lead. Think of a person…someone who made the ultimate sacrifice, someone who’s suffering now whether it be personal hardship or illness….and put their name on the white board by the spin room. Feel free to post a picture too if you’d like. Share, if you’d like, why you are “Carrying the load” for them (optional…not required). And then be reminded all month long WHO you are carrying with each heavy load.
Then there’s November…. Since we are Carrying the Load all October-long, November will be about dropping it…and then some! After a long hiatus, a weight loss challenge will be on the docket. Shred a few pounds as we head into the crazy holiday season! Details will be available soon….but be ready to get your game on! There will be PRIZES for winners, group accountability, and of course, fun SMACK TALK! Friendly competition, but also great opportunity to tweak your food intake because remember, “You can’t outwork a crappy diet!”. Stay tuned for the specifics!
