So how do you rank in your knowledge of Marines??
Here are your answers for those who didn’t already Google them:
1. Semper Fidelis means Always Faithful. And if you’ve ever heard our CF leader speak of his Marines, you will witness Semper Fidelis firsthand!
2. 3 Nicknames: Leathernecks (originating from a leather neck-piece that was a part of their uniform in the early days), Devil Dogs (which is based on the use of “Teufel Hunde” by German soldiers to describe Marines fighting in WWI) and Jarheads (given to Marines by US Sailors during WWII meant as an insult, but taken by the Marines as the utmost respect!)
3. Mascot is the Bulldog.
4. Marine tradition says the Corps was formed in a bar (because that’s where all good decisions are made, right?!). Specifically, it is said to be formed at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia.
5. Only Marine to earn 5 Navy crosses? Well, that’s the most notable Chesty Puller (Lewis Burwell Puller, to be official). And to boot, he also earned the Army Distinguished Service Cross.
