Monday “Did you know…?” You are what you eat.

The CrossFit Fitness model lays on a foundation of Diet/Nutrition. The description of World Class Fitness starts, “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.” The model suggests “In plain language, base your diet on garden vegetables, especially greens, lean meats, nuts and seeds, little starch, and no sugar. That’s about as simple as we can get. Many have observed that keeping your grocery cart to the perimeter of the grocery store while avoiding the aisles is a great way to protect your health. Food is perishable. The stuff with long shelf life is all suspect. If you follow these simple guidelines you will benefit from nearly all that can be achieved through nutrition.” (

Moveover, all that implies (or at least I infer) the nutrition must be clean. Did you know about GMO? Educate, liberate! Interesting vid from

Again I am reminded of words like morality, rational will, principles, obligation and duty while watching this clip. I sometimes ask myself, “What has become of us, mankind?” We already have an abyssmal track record of human behavior, and when money is the motivation the meaning of the words above is lost, and with that loss comes a corresponding loss in the Human Spirit. Nothing is sacred anymore, not even the food that nurishes humanity. These large chemical companies, and make no mistake about it, Dow and Monsanto are CHEMICAL companies, seek to find laboratory ways to simplify and make less expensive products which they can charge you more for, with the underlying message of, “these are better because…”!! It’s the “because” that should frighten the hell out of you! Twisted science, hidden truths, factual fallacies, this is what they deal in. Anyone who has not lived in a cave for the last 50 years well should know this, any of these companies ring a bell…RJ Reynolds, Brush Wellman, and Pacific Gas & Electric? If not maybe you heard of these, lung cancer, berylliosis, hexavalent chromium poisoning, (the last two diseases did not even exist until the 20th century) in all cases the real facts were known by those at the top of the food chain, they just ignored them and hid them because they deluded themselves into believing they and the money were more important than human lives. And you could go on and on with examples. If you truly believe the Government of the USA, the FDA, or any or other agency is looking out for the welfare of you and your family…WAKE UP…they are not…they are looking to protect and feed the machine, and if that means sacrificing lives…guess what? Somewhere down the road after the strange cancer deaths after the suffering, the loss, some talking head on a national media TV news will report something like this, “The indictment handed down today against, so and so from Monsanto…” and then maybe this, “A civil suit was settled out of court today for the victims of the Monsanto Seed tragedy, of the 400 million dollar settlement, the lawyers will divide 160 million between them and the rest will be divided among the 200 million victims around the globe who have been identified as surviving family members…” “It is estimated that Monsanto sold over 12 billion dollars worth of Genetically Modified Seeds over the course of two decades and hid the truth about the side effects from…” Ever heard this before…

Yes the list is Loooooong. Dont forget these guys too “Bayer, Dupont and Frontier” all our chemical and food friends. Saw the story about a farmer whose cattle were becoming sterile, he traced it to the GMO feed and went public. Turns out the Monsanto boys didnt like the press and caused him great pain.

So I was thinking of starting a small vegetable garden. Will I be able to find non-GMO seeds to plant?

James – there are also some organic seeds available at HD. They are clearly labeled with the USDA Organic seal.

Kate – feel free to pass on the catalog – anyone may borrow it. Just return to the gym when you’re done.

So, when shall we begin digging for the Corps Fitness CSA garden for all of us? Gets lotsa sun over there! 🙂

The GMO issue is MASSIVE. It surpasses and directly addresses almost every other major problem we face with regard to our current & future health and survival. It is paramount for our children and their children that we step-up and vote with our dollars for non-GM foods. At the very, very least, avoid at all costs the big 5 non-organic commodities: soy, corn, wheat, cotton and rice. The PBTs (persistent bioaccumlative toxins) that we’re walking around with inside us from various types of exposure are ticking time bombs, not to mention what it means for babies born with them.

The increased incidence of cancers (at ever younger ages); the increased incidence of anti-biotic resistance; the increased incidence of developmental disorders in children; the increased incidence of sterility and premature births and on and on – these are not happenstance. There isn’t any one smoking gun, but virtually all of the chemicals involved in non-organic food production are known (“believed to be…”) carcinogens and endocrine disruptors*. This shit has to stop, and it starts with the decisions we individually make in our everyday lives.

*Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the hormone system in animals, including humans. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders.

Excerpt from a New York Times article on GMO’s…take note on who the current deputy commissioner for foods from the FDA is…

“But the testing process is suspect: the F.D.A. relied on data submitted by AquaBounty (that data is for fish raised in Prince Edward Island, even though the company plans to raise the fish in Panama, which is possibly illegal).

Also curious is that the salmon is being categorized as a “new animal drug” which means that the advisory committee in charge of evaluating it is composed mostly of veterinarians and animal scientists, instead of, say, fish ecologists or experts in food safety. Not surprisingly, the biotech industry has spent over half a billion dollars on G.M.O. lobbyists in the last decade, and Michael Taylor, the F.D.A. deputy commissioner for foods, was once vice president for public policy at Monsanto. Numerous groups of consumers, farmers, environmental advocates, scientists, supporters of organic food and now even congressmen — last week, a bill was introduced to ban G.E. salmon — believe that the approval process demonstrated a bias towards the industry.

Cross-breeding is guaranteed with alfalfa and likely with corn. (The U.S.D.A. claims to be figuring out ways to avoid this happening, but by then the damage may already be done.) And the organic dairy industry is going to suffer immediate and frightening losses when G.E. alfalfa is widely grown, since many dairy cows eat dried alfalfa (hay), and the contamination of organic alfalfa means the milk of animals fed with that hay can no longer be called organic. Likewise, when feed corn is contaminated by G.E. ethanol corn, the products produced from it won’t be organic. (On the one hand, U.S.D.A. joins the F.D.A. in not seeing G.E. foods as materially different; on the other it limits the amount found in organic foods. Hello? Guys? Could you at least pretend to be consistent?)”

How about a really big WTF?

I learned a lot of disturbing facts when I read The Omnivore’s Dilemma – a great read, though a little dry, if you are looking to learn more about this. And about corn – there is a LOT of discussion about corn in there.

I love the CSA @ CF idea! We just won a gardening kit from a fundraiser we attended this weekend… maybe it was a sign.
