Hero Week Day 7 – Honoring Children Battling Pediatric Cancer
Our last day we honored children battling pediatric cancer. We were privileged to have Ali, the Executive Director from PSU Berks THON, as well as Britt Wagner and her mom and dad Lori & Bob Wagner join us and talk with us today.
As mentioned, Ali is the Executive Director of the local PSU branch of THON which is a 46 hour no sleep/no sit dance marathon to raise money for pediatric cancer. One statistic Ali shared with us is that every 3 minutes a child is diagnosed with a pediatric cancer. At PSU Berks, they are directly connected with 3 local families….Natalie Biancone, Jason Swope and the Delaney Brown Family. Natalie and Jason are currently in remission from their disease, but as many of us know, Delaney Brown lost her fight to cancer in 2013.
On hand also was survivor, Britt Wagner, a 15 year old sophomore from Governor Mifflin. She was diagnosed at age 11 with Lymphoma and is now cancer free. And while sweet and at-the-moment shy Brittany (those who know Britt closely know that she is bubbly and very full of life!) told us she is “lucky” and happy and healthy, she still has challenges from the effects of her treatment. So while the life-threatening disease is in remission for her, her challenges are still real.
So for our last day of HW, our workout was a 2 round, 2 sided workout; one side shoelace Corps Fitness style of 1 minute stations, and one side a 10 min. AMRAP “Cindy” workout of 5 pull-ups, 10 push ups, 15 air squats with every 3 rounds being a sprint around Bldg. 7. A great ending to a great week.
